Choosing Which Carrier, Wrap or Sling to Purchase

I'm not sure which baby carrier to choose can you help me?
Sure, we'd love to! Please email our baby wearing consultants at and tell us a little bit about you (size, weight), your baby (age, weight etc), your lifestyle, your budget & any preferences you've already thought about and we'll come up with a few suggestions for you to look at.

Should I buy a baby carrier, wrap or sling?
This is a common question and probably the hardest to answer...because it depends on you, your baby and your lifestyle! Here's some things to consider:

Baby Wraps
In general baby wraps are used from newborn up until about 12 months, but some products such the Hug-a-Bub Wrap can be used up to 2 years old. They are soft, stretchy and very popular with mums & dads with young babies.

Its great having your little one kept snug up close to your body, and they can be adjusted to suit different people and positions. They look complicated to wear but they are really simple once you've done it a few times!

Sometimes people start with a baby wrap and them progress to a baby carrier once their baby grows a big bigger.

Baby Carriers

Soft but slightly more structured carriers, such as the popular carriers from Tula, Ergobaby and Manduca, are also a great choice and for many people provide the best of both worlds.

They are still soft and stretchy to keep your baby close and snug, but with a bit more structure & an ergonomic design that can be adjusted with straps and buckles (to suit both mum and dad!) to suit almost any wearer and any baby. They are quick to put on, and its easy to take your baby in and out.

Many people find baby carriers more comfortable when being used for longer periods of time.

Most baby carriers can use used inward and outward facing, and with an addition of an insert can be used from newborn.

Not sure whether to go for a sling or carrier? Take a look at the Tula Half Buckle carrier which bridges the gap between the two & offers the best of both worlds!

Ring Slings

Ring slings are slightly less common but the feedback from our customers has been very positive. Mums & dads love having their babies up close, and they make breastfeeding 'on the go' easier! Similar in design to a wrap but with the addition of a 'ring' which sits on your shoulder to adjust the sling.

Regardless of which product you decide to buy make sure to follow the safe baby wearing guidelines and the manufacturers guidelines at all times.

Baby Wearing FAQ

Are baby slings and carriers safe to use?
All the brands we stock have been used by thousands of mums and dads for many decades, are extensively tested and conform to the relevant safety standards. However it is essential you ALWAYS follow the manufacturers instructions and the T.I.C.K.S rules for baby safety

What are the benefits of baby wearing?
Some of the benefits have been proven in research studies and others are anecdotal. Baby wearing has been shown to strengthen the bond between mother (or father) and their child. Research has also shown that babies who are carried cry less often and are more confident as they grow up.

Aside from the benefits to your child, its also great for you too! It makes discreet breastfeeding easier, allows you to carry your baby while keeping your hands free, makes its quicker and easier to get out and about, and saves you time while getting jobs around the house done!

Can I share my sling or baby carrier with my partner?
Yes usually but it depends on your size and the brand. Most baby carriers can be adjusted easily and used by different people. Slings are adjustable but sometimes come in different sizes to suit different sized people!

Will I get too hot with a baby carrier?
Baby carriers are designed to keep your baby snug and warm, which they love! Modern designs use breathable fabrics, ventilation areas and other techniques to keep you and your baby cool.

What if my baby doesn't like the sling or carrier?
Most babies love being kept close to their mum and they create a womb like experience of being snug and secure which is very natural and nurturing. If your baby isn't used to being in a carrier they may get upset at first and it may take a few attempts before they relax and start to enjoy it! However if your baby does get distressed when in the carrier please stop using and consult a professional to make sure they are not being hurt when in the carrier.
