Babes in Arms the founder of the annual Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week (ANZBW) has a new, fully charitable focus this year. The celebration will run parallel with International Babywearing Week from 5 – 10 October 2016.
Australia and New Zealand Babywearing Week (ANZBW) was originally conceived to raise the profile of babywearing in a pram dominated culture. The community-driven events have grown in momentum as more and more parents gather together to celebrate the freedom that babywearing offers, and to share the joys of being connected both to their baby and to their community.
New Channels of Gifting
Giving back to the community has always been central to ANZBW events. Since the first ANZBW, Babes in Arms has donated over $20,000 to family-focused charities and given away hundreds of baby carriers to both individuals and local communities.
ANZBW 2016 marks a gear-shift in generosity. Babes in Arms will focus its efforts on touching lives marked by greatest need; by identifying influential charity groups who use their channels to distribute baby carriers where babywearing will make a powerful daily impact.
The first charity partnership Babes in Arms has committed to supporting is St Kilda Mums, a volunteer-run not-for-profit organisation based in St Kilda, Melbourne. St Kilda Mums rehome new and pre-loved baby goods and nursery equipment to families in need.
A special allocation of Ergobaby Carrier has also been devoted for the lending libraries of babywearing groups. ANZBW wants to support babywearing groups that build bridges; groups that share an inclusive babywearing message that welcomes all babywearers, regardless of carrier choice. The focus on ‘practise not product’ will be an essential criteria in selecting babywearing groups to receive Ergobaby giftings.
Charity and Babywearing Group applications for Ergobaby Carrier giftings are now being accepted through www.babywearingweek.com.au.
ANZBW also raises awareness about the health benefits of babywearing for parents and their babies which include (references available):
Babes in Arms director and mum to four, Anita Lincolne-Lomax said that the ancient wisdom of babywearing - the extended use of baby carriers and wraps - offers busy modern parents freedom and convenience, while providing their babies the most nurturing place to grow. “Using a baby carrier doesn’t just keep baby peaceful and secure, it gives parents freedom to keep fit and exercise, to meet other parents and potentially feed on the go. Babywearing keeps parenting fun!’
